STATEMENT
Much of my work I would describe as creative photo reportage. Rarely do I plan a picture, but I always carry a camera and I look for interesting subjects and ideas as I go about my daily life.
I am interested in the visual expression of time and movement. I like to keep the shutter open for as long as possible to capture movement while at the same time attempting to keep the environment sharp and in focus. I am also drawn to abstraction. Therefore it is not always the subject that draws my eye but the shape, colour and patterns that I see.
I also take multiple planes on a single negative and expose a series of images on top of each other, these pictures often become very abstracted and take on a painted quality.
With these methods I try to encourage the viewer to see the pattern and rhythm of the image rather than dwelling upon the actual subject.
I am also like portraiture. Many of my portraits are shot again ‘on the hoof ‘ and using the available light, which I often enhance by bouncing it light with reflectors. The studio portraits are more formal however and I use both flash and tungsten depending on what I am trying to achieve.
However, the use of available light is still my first love.
